RainCoast Environmental is led by Katsky Venter, an environmental consultant with 15 years of experience in environmental management and consulting. She specializes in the development, implementation and management of strategic and integrative environmental monitoring and permitting programs. Katsky is extremely efficient and has a deep understanding of client needs, interests, and constraints. She works collaboratively with stakeholders to improve environmental monitoring and management programs and to reduce environmental impacts.
With an MSc from UBC, Katsky began her career as an Aquatic Ecologist with Rescan Environmental, designing and carrying out marine and freshwater aquatic sampling programs and coordinating comprehensive cross-discipline field programs in Nunavut, BC, Saskatchewan and the Dominican Republic.
Katsky subsequently spent six years as an Environmental Superintendent (with Newmont) then Environmental Manager (with TMAC) for a Nunavut-based mine where she was responsible for project environmental compliance, baseline, and monitoring during exploration, permitting, construction and care and maintenance phases. This work was undertaken through the development of a skilled team of Indigenous staff who were involved in all project environmental compliance monitoring activities and supported consultant field programs and reclamation activities. Equipped with the skills and experience gained at Hope Bay, many of these team members moved on to related positions within local and territorial government, Regional Inuit Organizations, or pursued additional education in the environmental field. In this role, Katsky was also involved in project permitting and licensing, including the preparation of an environmental impact statement and successful project amendment applications.
Combining her unique experience in industry, environmental science, and research, Katsky established her own consultancy in 2016. Since that time, she has provided support to clients and projects including: the Ekati Diamond Mine (Northwest Territories), Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO - British Columbia and Federal), the Back River Project (Nunavut), the Hope Bay Project (Nunavut), and the Hackett River Project (Nunavut).
On behalf of these clients, Katsky has supported the preparation of Environmental Impact Statements, mining and exploration water licencing and renewal, and Project amendment applications. Katsky has also developed or improved numerous management and monitoring plans and programs, led stakeholder and regulatory engagements, prepared environmental reports, conducted scientific reviews, supervised, and provided third-party review of, existing consultant programs and reports, and provided assessment and guidance in relation to applicable regulatory procedures and requirements. She is an expert in Nunavut's regulatory processes and the development of environmental management and monitoring programs.
Katsky is supported by a team of highly qualified and competent biologists and scientists who work in collaboration with specialized technical experts to address specific client needs. RainCoast's associates are able to provide supplemental expertise in fisheries and aquatic sciences, scientific research, facilitation and engagement, and environmental management and coordination.
RainCoast prides itself on providing a targeted and streamlined approach and its ability to identify optimizations that minimize project costs, reduce risks and impacts and maximize benefits, all while gaining Indigenous, regulatory and stakeholder support through meaningful and productive engagement.
